New Library Exhibition

A new exhibition for the autumn semester celebrates the achievements of Team Scotland at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Walking in the footsteps of heroes:

For the third Commonwealth Games in succession our Hosts and Champions team were invited to produce an exhibition for Scotland House, the headquarters of Team Scotland, at Birmingham 2022. On this occasion Team Scotland wanted to celebrate aspects of equality, diversity and inclusion among its former medal winners. The exhibition ‘Walking in the Footsteps of Heroes’ presents an illustrated timeline of key stories from the history of the Games. It features profiles of inspirational female athletes, para-sport pioneers and athletes from diverse backgrounds who chose to represent Scotland. The exhibition was displayed in Scotland House during the 2022 Birmingham Games and we are now delighted to have the opportunity to bring its celebration of Team Scotland’s sporting heritage to walls of the University Library.

“Once again, it is an honour to work with Team Scotland to celebrate their heritage and to share significant stories emerging from their collection. Walking in the Footsteps of Heroes includes some household names of Scottish sport, but it also spotlights some athletes who have been forgotten over time. We were asked to showcase the diversity of athletes who have represented Scotland at the Games, and I hope we have managed to achieve this in our selection of personal stories.”

Team Scotland at Birmingham 2022:

Team Scotland enjoyed a successful Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games finishing sixth in the overall medal table. The team won an impressive haul of 13 gold medals across Aquatics, Athletics, Boxing, Cycling, Judo and Lawn Bowls – which contributed to a total of 51 medals, including 11 silver and 27 bronze. The library exhibition also includes a photographic celebration of Team Scotland’s gold medal winners at Birmingham 2022. The images were specially selected by Commonwealth Games Scotland to represent the achievements of the team across a range of sports.

The exhibition also displays examples of the promotional material produced for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. Keep an eye out for Perry, the official mascot of the Games, the latest addition to the mascot family which forms part of the Commonwealth Games Scotland Archive.

The story of Team Scotland’s participation in the 2022 Games will be added to the Commonwealth Games Scotland Archive, including the impressive achievements of Stirling students. This rich collection of sporting heritage is held in the University Archives, who work closely with Commonwealth Games Scotland to preserve and promote Team Scotland’s long and distinguished history.
