Art Collection Theme of the Year 2024-25: Human Experience

Each year, all the Art Collection’s exhibitions, events and workshops are directly inspired by one of the University research themes. Previous themes have included The Art of Wellbeing, Inspired! Campus and Collections as Inspiration and Refugees and Migration.

We are delighted to announce that in the 2024-2025 session, our theme will be Human Experience, where we will be exploring the role of creativity in our collective responses to very human crises.

Human Experience will examine topics such as displacement, climate change, social deprivation and covid-19, highlighting the resilience of the human spirit and our ability to continue to create art through and about troubling times. We will be bringing world-class artists to the Pathfoot Building, such as Ken Currie, Margaret Mitchell and Sekai Machache.

Our Crush Hall exhibition will be a collaboration with the Fleming Collection. This Fragile Earth will investigate how pioneer Scottish artists responded to the threat of climate change ahead of their time. Artists in this exhibition will include Thomas Joshua Cooper, Will Maclean, Elizabeth Ogilvie and James Morrison.

Another highlight will be an exhibition of work from the national Remembering Together project in which artists in all 32 local authority areas were commissioned to co-create ways of honouring losses from the Covid-19 pandemic with communities. A selection of the resulting artwork will be brought together for the first time, allowing us to reflect and remember, hope and heal.

Pathfoot Exhibitions will be available to view from September, with a formal opening on October 3. Keep an eye on our website for details of upcoming talks, workshops and events or join our mailing list!
